HERBERT MILTON 1867 - 1931
SON OF JOHN & MARY
The 6th son, and 8th child, of John and Mary Milton, Herberts birth at WOOLSTON GREEN near STAVERTON was registered by his mother at Buckfastleigh Sub District on 24th May 1867, following his birth on the 15th. She made her mark and declared her maiden name to be Coneybear.
At the age of 3 he was living with his parents at ADAMS HILL COTTAGE, Ashburton.
He is believed to have left school at the age of 10, and the 1881 Census finds him, at the age of 14, employed as a "Farm Servant" at HIGHER MEAD FARM Ashburton. Closer examination shows that this farm was in the HIGH GROVE area, and was operated by a family called Smeadon. As High Grove is near Buckland it is highly likely that Herbert was working for the same family that his father John had worked for at the 1851 Census when his employers name was given as Smirdon. Herberts brother John was also working in the High Grove area in 1881,
In 1887, one week after his 20th birthday, (although the certificate gives him as 21), Herbert found a bride, AMELIA JANE STEPHENS who herself gave HIGH GROVE as her place of abode at marriage. Herbert himself gave his address as BRIMRIDGE FARM, TORBRIAN which is where his parents lived, but whether he had returned to work at Brimridge or just gave that as his family home is not clear.
Herbert Milton and Amelia Jane Stephens were married at the Wesleyan Methodists Chapel at ASHBURTON on 22nd May 1887.
One of the witness was Elizabeth Milton. This was probably Herberts sister.
