Family Connections » Stamper
The Stamper family appear to have had strong connections with the small Lake District Parish of COLTON, between the south ends of Coniston and Windermere Lakes. (G.R. 318 860).
‘George’ was a name which appeared regularly for Stamper males.
Two George Stampers were baptised at Colton, in 1802 and 1808 respectively.
GEORGE STAMPER & ESTHER BOWES
One of the George Stampers born Colton early 1800’s was probably the GEORGE STAMPER, bachelor, of COLTON who married ESTHER BOWES, spinster, of THWAITES on 21st June 1828. Esther was aged 21/22 and living at LADYHALL (G.R. 193 860), a cluster of cottages close to the place where the railway now crosses the Duddon, and on the opposite bank to Foxfield.
George was a Labourer and, later, a Coachman.
Less than 14 weeks after the marriage ceremony, a son, JOHN STAMPER, was born, and Ladyhall is given as place of birth. JOHN was baptised at THWAITES on 4th October 1828, and his mother, ESTHER, died a few weeks later and was buried at THWAITES, aged 22, on 27th December 1828.
So, Esther was married on June 21st, had a child by October 4th, and had died by December 27th.
Fortunately for our story, the child, JOHN STAMPER, survived.

JOHN STAMPER
(Son of George & Esther)
Born in 1828 at Millom or Thwaite, and having lost his mother, ESTHER, when only a few weeks old, it is not known who brought young JOHN up. It was probably his wife’s parents who may have lived at Ladyhall.
In April 1861, at the age of 32, JOHN was working as a Gardener/Domestic Servant at THE SQUARE, BROUGHTON -IN-FURNESS. He was sharing accommodation with a Hoop Maker.
On 22nd June 1861, still aged 32, JOHN married DOROTHY DAWSON, aged 19 at BROUGHTON-IN-FURNESS Parish Church.
