William Henry Milton

WILLIAM HENRY MILTON

(Son of Henry & Melia)

Born near Ashburton in 1887, William was only aged around 4 or 5 when the family moved to Haverigg.

It is believed that he went to school in Millom.

On leaving school he went to work as a Labourer and later as a Miner for Hodbarrow Mining Co. They were after Iron Ore.

A good sprinter, William (generally known as ‘Bill’ or ‘Billy’) represented Millom N.U. Rugby F.C. as a winger, and Millom Football Club with whom he won the Cumberland Senior Cup in the 1911/12 season. The gold medal won on this occasion is still held by the family (1997).

On 28th June 1911 William married BEATRICE ANN PEARSON STAMPER at the Parish Church in Millom.
